Olympic Champion Abhinav Backs Meghalaya’s National Games Potential
Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra has said Meghalaya’s young population and deep-rooted sporting culture give the state a solid base to build on as it prepares to host the 39th National Games in March 2027.
Bindra made the remarks on Friday after inaugurating Meghalaya’s first High-Performance Sports Science Centre in Shillong, a facility seen as a significant step in the state’s push to build a modern sports ecosystem ahead of the prestigious multi-disciplinary event.
Describing the National Games as an important milestone for Meghalaya, Bindra said the event would bring national attention to the state’s growing sports infrastructure and talent pool. He expressed enthusiasm about the state hosting the Games next March, calling it a major opportunity to showcase Meghalaya’s talent and sporting capabilities on the national stage.
The Beijing 2008 Olympic champion also welcomed Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma’s vision of transforming Meghalaya into a sports hub and one of India’s leading sporting destinations. Assuring his commitment to the endeavour, Bindra said his team would extend all possible support towards achieving that goal.
Pointing to the state’s demographic strength, Bindra said Meghalaya’s large young population was its greatest asset, noting that sport already plays a significant role in the state’s culture — a combination that could be leveraged for long-term athletic development.
His comments come at a time when Meghalaya is strengthening its sports infrastructure and stepping up investment in scientific training and athlete development in the run-up to the National Games.
