Delhi Capitals Appoint Chaminda Vaas Fast Bowling Coach for IPL 2027
Former Sri Lanka fast bowling great Chaminda Vaas is set to embark on his first coaching role in the Indian Premier League, having been appointed Delhi Capitals’ fast bowling coach ahead of the IPL 2027 season. The 52-year-old, one of the most successful bowlers in Sri Lanka’s cricket history, joins a new-look backroom staff assembled under head coach Sourav Ganguly.
Vaas, who claimed 355 wickets in Test cricket and 400 in ODIs during a celebrated playing career, replaces Munaf Patel, who served as the Capitals’ bowling coach over the previous two seasons. His appointment comes shortly after Delhi Capitals named former India star Yuvraj Singh as their assistant and batting coach earlier this week, underlining the franchise’s sweeping changes to its support staff.
The veteran coach brings considerable international experience to the Delhi Capitals setup. Vaas made his coaching debut with a brief contract for New Zealand before being appointed bowling coach of Sri Lanka’s men’s team, a role he held from 2013 to 2015. In 2016, he was contracted as Ireland’s bowling coach for the T20 World Cup, before being re-hired by Sri Lanka — taking his tally of separate stints with the island nation’s side to three.
Vaas is also familiar with the IPL from his playing days. The left-arm seamer represented the Deccan Chargers between 2008 and 2010, picking up 18 wickets in 13 games for the franchise. The move to Delhi now hands him his first opportunity to work in the league from the sidelines.
With Ganguly leading the team as head coach, Yuvraj Singh overseeing the batting and Vaas mentoring the pace bowlers, Delhi Capitals head into IPL 2027 with a backroom staff rich in international pedigree — and the franchise will be hopeful that the refreshed coaching setup can translate that experience into results on the field.
