Outrage in Meghalaya: HITO Strongly Condemns Cow Protection Rally, Citing Deep Offense to Christian Sentiments
The Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO) has formally opposed the anti-cow slaughter movement set to take place in Meghalaya’s capital, Shillong, on October 2. The group has expressed concerns that the planned rally, which aims to elevate the cow to the status of “Mother of the Nation” through a flag-raising ceremony led by Shankaracharya Avimukteshwarandah, would provoke the religious sentiments of the predominantly Christian population in the state.
In a letter to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, HITO emphasized that beef is a staple food for the indigenous Hynñiewtrep and Achik communities, who have traditionally consumed it for centuries. The organization’s letter argued that raising the issue in their region challenges their fundamental right to food choice and consumption. Furthermore, they questioned the legality of declaring the cow as the “Mother of the Nation,” citing Article 18(1) of the Constitution of India, which prohibits the state from conferring titles except for military or academic distinctions.
HITO also stressed that such actions undermine the cultural identity and religious sentiments of the Hynñiewtrep people. The organization warned that if the rally proceeds, they will respond by taking to the streets on the same day to raise the flag of the 25 Himas and demand the rights that they have been denied for over 75 years, particularly in relation to the Inner Line Permit (ILP) and the Autonomous District Councils (ADC), which have not been fully honored by both Central and State governments.
The organization urged the state government to take appropriate measures to prevent the planned yatra from taking place, in order to avoid escalating tensions and disrespecting the local communities’ cultural and religious sensibilities.
