Nagaland Convenes Consultative Meeting on Indo-Naga Political Issue
Kohima | September 12 – The Government of Nagaland convened a consultative meeting on Thursday to discuss the ongoing Indo-Naga political issue, bringing together diverse stakeholders, including tribal hohos, civil society representatives, mass-based organizations, church bodies, NGOs, gazetted officers’ unions, student bodies, and political parties.
Addressing the media post-meeting, Power and Parliamentary Affairs Minister KG Kenye stated that the discussions were fruitful, with the participants urging Naga political groups to avoid factionalism and unite towards a common goal. The meeting emphasized that the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah) [NSCN (IM)] and the Working Committee of Naga National Political Groups (WC, NNPGs) should present a unified document in their negotiations with the Indian government to prevent confusion and streamline the peace process.
The house adopted unanimous resolutions, appreciating the efforts of the negotiating parties for adhering to the ceasefire agreements despite past challenges. It also appealed for intensified efforts to unify Naga society and bring all stakeholders together under a spirit of understanding.
The gathering called on the Government of India (GoI) to elevate the dialogue by appointing a senior ministerial-level interlocutor to ensure the process receives the weight it deserves. Kenye noted a collective determination among the stakeholders to see the peace talks through to a successful conclusion, emphasizing that unresolved issues could have serious repercussions.
He highlighted that since the formation of the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) under Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, there has been a growing consensus on the need for transparency and public engagement regarding the Naga political issue. This consultative meeting was the first of its kind, with plans for more to follow to further explore and work towards resolving the Indo-Naga political agreements.
“We are anxious as we cannot keep on waiting for a solution,” Kenye concluded, noting that the presentations and documents submitted during the meeting will be reviewed by the PAC before convening the next deliberation.
