Revolutionize Your Travel: How Booking Holdings CEO Glenn Fogel Foresees AI Transforming Trip Planning Forever
Travelers love the adventure of new destinations but often dread the planning it entails. A CivicScience survey of over 2,400 individuals revealed that 71% find booking travel somewhat stressful, with this percentage even higher among parents. The headache comes from navigating booking sites, reviews, star ratings, and price comparisons to secure the best deal.
Enter artificial intelligence, poised to transform this tedious process. Companies like Booking Holdings, which owns Booking.com, Kayak, and others, aim to revolutionize travel planning. CEO Glenn Fogel envisions a system where AI anticipates travel needs based on customer data, suggesting destinations and requirements like baby cribs or high floors without travelers needing to specify these preferences. "Technology can surpass what human travel agents were capable of," Fogel remarked.
These AI advancements promise a personalized experience, adapting as travelers’ preferences change over time, such as transitioning from singles’ trips to family vacations. Fogel also sees the potential for AI to offer tailor-made suggestions, such as recommended restaurants or exclusive discounts based on previous preferences.
Currently, the average traveler spends over five hours and reads approximately 141 web pages before booking, according to Expedia Group’s "The Path to Purchase" report. However, the future may hold the possibility of booking entire trips in one go, including accommodation, flights, and activities.
Although these AI-powered planning tools are not yet fully realized, Fogel assures that their arrival will be gradual, with iterative improvements. Booking Holdings has already introduced a generative AI service, "Trip Planner," in beta, offering a glimpse into the future of hassle-free travel planning. "While it won’t happen tomorrow, I assure you it will come," Fogel affirmed.
