FEFKA Accuses: Hema Committee’s ‘Rule of Exclusion’ Shockingly Ignores Non-WCC Women
FEFKA Criticizes Hema Committee’s ‘Rule of Exclusion’
Thiruvananthapuram: The Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA) has voiced strong criticism against the Hema Committee, accusing it of exclusionary practices in its interactions, particularly neglecting women outside the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC).
Addressing a press conference, FEFKA General Secretary B. Unnikrishnan highlighted that FEFKA has been the only organization to demand transparency by revealing the names mentioned in the committee’s report. He emphasized the report’s significance in Malayalam cinema history but criticized the committee’s selective engagement process.
Unnikrishnan questioned the criteria used by the committee to choose who they interacted with, noting that no general secretaries from FEFKA’s 21 member organizations, representing approximately 800 women, were approached. He also criticized the committee for not extending the same questionnaire procedure to FEFKA as it did with WCC members, stating FEFKA would have provided detailed written submissions.
The complaint extended to the committee’s group meetings, which included only WCC members, excluding women from other organizations and FEFKA. Unnikrishnan pointed out the oversight of not consulting key industry figures like Seven Arts Mohan, a veteran production executive.
Despite prior assurances from the committee to engage with FEFKA’s grassroots-level women workers, Unnikrishnan noted that no follow-up action was taken. This omission has led to significant dissatisfaction within FEFKA regarding the committee’s methodology and findings.
