Furious Backlash: BJP Slams Rahul Gandhi for Meeting ‘Anti-India Voice’ Ilhan Omar, Echoes Even Pakistani Leaders
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders have sharply criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi following his meeting with US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar during his visit to the United States. The Minnesota Democrat is known for her controversial views, particularly concerning India. Amit Malviya, head of the BJP’s IT Cell, accused Gandhi of aligning with anti-India elements, labeling Omar a “Pakistan-sponsored anti-India voice” and a “radical Islamist” who advocates for an independent Kashmir. Malviya suggested that Congress is now overtly working against India’s interests.
Omar’s recent remarks on India, including her call for US support in Canada’s investigation into India’s alleged involvement in the assassination of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, have incited reactions in India. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla questioned Gandhi’s choice to engage with Omar, highlighting her history of anti-India resolutions, opposition to Article 370 abrogation, and her visit to Pakistan-administered Kashmir (PoK) on a Pakistani-sponsored trip. Another BJP spokesperson, Pradeep Bhandari, argued that Gandhi’s meeting with Omar clearly reveals his support for Pakistan apologists and anti-India elements, asserting that the Congress Party is compromising India’s national security.
Gandhi’s three-day US visit included interactions with the Indian diaspora, students, and US lawmakers. His itinerary began with meetings at the Rayburn House Office Building, organized by Congressman Bradley James Sherman. Among the attendees were Congress members Jonathan Jackson, Ro Khanna, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Barbara Lee, Shri Thanedar, Ilhan Omar, Hank Johnson, and Jan Schakowsky.
This trip is Gandhi’s first to the US since becoming the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, preceding the US Presidential Elections. In a Facebook post, he noted the significance of his visit, expressing anticipation for discussions aimed at strengthening India-US relations. However, BJP leaders remain critical, portraying his engagement with Omar as detrimental to India’s interests.
