Why Sohum Shah Says Missing the Oscars Isn’t Heartbreaking: The Surprising Reason Behind It
Tumbbad: A Horror Classic Returns to Theatres
Beloved Hindi horror film, Tumbbad, directed by Rahi Anil Barve and starring Sohum Shah, is making a grand return to theatres this week. Initially released on October 12, 2018, the film garnered acclaim from critics but had an underwhelming box office run. Over time, however, Tumbbad found a dedicated fanbase through OTT platforms, transforming it into a cult favorite.
On Monday, a special screening took place in Mumbai where Sohum Shah made a surprise appearance. Overwhelmed by the positive reception, Shah expressed his gratitude, emphasizing how the audience’s love has kept the film alive. Reflecting on why Tumbbad wasn’t sent to the Oscars, Shah shared that he holds no regrets. "Oscars are fine, but this movie was made for our people, and the love we receive from them means everything," he remarked. Shah noted that whenever he posts on social media, fans aren’t concerned with trivial comments—they constantly ask for a sequel or for the film to be re-released. This passionate fan demand is what has brought Tumbbad back to theaters after six years.
During the event, Shah also highlighted that the true star of their folk horror film is its compelling content, not any big-name actors. Known for its haunting depiction of Hastar, a cursed monster, Tumbbad creates a chilling atmosphere that stands out in Indian cinema.
Other key cast members include Jyoti Malse, Ronjini Chakraborty, Mohammad Samad, and Anita Date-Kelkar. Fans can look forward to seeing this horror gem in theaters once again on September 13, 2024.
