New Delhi, September 1 (IANS) — US technology giant Apple on Tuesday formally ushered in a new leadership era as John Ternus assumed the role of chief executive officer, effective September 1, succeeding Tim Cook after Cook’s 15-year tenure. Cook, who became CEO in August 2011 following co‑founder Steve Jobs’ departure, has moved into a newly created role as executive chairman, where he will concentrate on engaging with global policymakers and advising on select company matters. Ternus has also joined Apple’s board of directors.
Ternus began at Apple in 2001 on the product design team and was promoted to senior vice‑president of hardware engineering in 2021. He has overseen hardware engineering across Apple’s product lines and played key roles in the development of the iPad, AirPods and multiple generations of the iPhone and Mac. His team most recently launched the ultrathin iPhone Air and the new MacBook Neo.
When announcing the transition in April, Cook said, “It has been the greatest privilege of my life to be the CEO of Apple,” and described Ternus as “having the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator and the heart to lead with integrity.”
Under Cook’s leadership, Apple’s market capitalisation grew from roughly $350 billion when he took over to around $4 trillion, while annual revenue climbed from about $108 billion in 2011 to more than $400 billion. Apple’s services business — including the App Store, Apple Music and Apple Pay — also emerged as a major growth engine, generating more than $100 billion annually.
The leadership change comes at a pivotal moment for Apple as artificial intelligence has become the company’s biggest strategic challenge. Ternus inherits the task of accelerating Apple’s AI strategy while preserving its ecosystem‑driven business model and the company’s vast installed base of customers.
