Massive floods that hit the Nepal–Tibet region on August 26, 2026 have left 405 people from Maharashtra affected, and state authorities are racing to bring the stranded home. According to the State Disaster Management Department’s update on August 30, 262 people have been repatriated, 76 are in contact and safe, and intensive efforts are under way to trace and contact the remaining 67 missing from official communications. A special central government team has reached Kathmandu to assist with tracing and repatriation, and the Indian Ambassador to Nepal met the team to issue directions for coordination.
The central team is working with local authorities in Nepal to locate those who have not been contacted and to arrange safe onward travel. Following instructions from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the Maharashtra government is providing assistance to resolve travel-related difficulties, the official release said. The Chief Minister’s Office and state administration are continuously monitoring the situation to ensure the safe return of affected tourists and residents.
Authorities reported that 60 of the unreachable group travelled through Richa Tours Pvt Ltd and seven others had registered through an online link; administrative efforts to determine their locations and status are ongoing. Officials said the group of 67 still being traced corresponds to these 60 tour-booked travellers and the seven registrants who have not yet been reached.
Movements since the floods include the safe arrival of 37 citizens in Mumbai on the evening of August 29 from Saga near Mansarovar in Tibet, and 105 people returning to Nagpur. Another 69 Maharashtra residents are expected to complete their onward journeys and arrive in Mumbai in the coming days, according to the state release.
In this emergency, the State Disaster Management Department is coordinating with central agencies, the Indian Embassy in Nepal and local partners to prioritise contact verification, medical checks where needed, and organised repatriation. The release framed the actions as part of an ongoing effort to ensure the welfare and safe return of all stranded citizens. — IANS
