Week 33 Must-Read: Pixel 11, Honor Robot Phone & Redmi 17
Google kicked off a busy week in consumer tech with the launch of the Pixel 11 family and the Pixel Watch 5, driven by Google’s new Tensor G6 system-on-chip built on a 3nm process. The lineup includes the Pixel 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro XL and the 11 Pro Fold; pre-orders are open and general sales for the phones and the Pro Fold begin August 20, with the Pixel 11 priced from $899, the Pixel 11 Pro from €1,199 and the Pro XL from €1,399 in Europe, and the Pro Fold starting at $1,899 in the U.S.
Hardware changes are evolutionary rather than radical. The Pixel 11 Pro and Pro XL share nearly identical camera systems: a 50MP 1/1.3‑inch main sensor, a 48MP ultrawide (sensor sizes roughly 1/2.51″ vs 1/2.55″ between the two), a 48MP 5x zoom (slightly larger on one model), and a 42MP front camera. The base Pixel 11 gains a larger main sensor (1/1.56″ vs the previous 1/2.0″), while the Pro Fold also ups its main sensor but ships with a marginally smaller battery (4,806mAh vs 5,015mAh).
In China, Honor unveiled the Robot Phone, a camera‑centric flagship that deploys a motorized 4‑DoF titanium gimbal from the rear to stabilize and automatically pan/tilt for AI subject tracking. The primary camera is a 200MP 1/1.28″ f/1.6 unit, joined by a 200MP 2.7x periscope telephoto and a 50MP ultrawide. Honor partnered with ARRI to bring 10‑bit ARRI LogC3 recording, ARRI Wide Gamut 3 and ARRI Looks to the device. The phone uses a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip, a 6.31‑inch LTPO OLED and a 7,060mAh battery; pricing starts at CNY 9,999 (12GB/512GB) and CNY 12,999 (16GB/1TB), with Chinese sales slated to begin August 18 and no international launch yet confirmed.
Xiaomi expanded both software and hardware this week. HyperOS 4, based on Android 17, introduces a glass-like aesthetic, deeper lock‑screen customization, resizable folders and grouped widgets, improved landscape handling for apps and floating windows, and AI-driven resource preloading to speed common tasks. The new OS is expected to roll out first to Xiaomi’s latest devices, with an open beta in China announced to start imminently.
On the hardware side, Xiaomi’s Redmi announcements include the budget-focused Redmi 17 duo-Redmi 17 5G (Snapdragon 6s Gen 4) and Redmi 17 4G (Helio G200 Ultra)—both with 6.9‑inch 144Hz LCDs, 50MP main cameras, side‑mounted fingerprint readers, IP64 protection, 7,000mAh batteries with 33W charging and prices from €249 (5G) and €199 (4G) in Europe. The Redmi K100 Pro and K100 Pro Max target the flagship segment with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, 185Hz OLEDs, massive batteries (8,580mAh and 9,070mAh), 100W wired and 50W wireless charging, 200MP OIS main cameras and Pro Max‑grade secondary optics; the K100 Pro starts at CNY 3,699 and the Pro Max at CNY 4,499 for 12GB/256GB models. Those K100 models are China‑only for now but are rumored to appear abroad under Poco branding.
Sony reports strong sales for the Xperia 1 VIII, with notable demand for higher‑storage units and the new gold color; the company emphasized that features like the microSD slot and the 3.5mm headphone jack remain “integral” to the Xperia identity.
