Day 4: Search for 3 Missing after Delhi Car Plunges into Lohit River
The search for three people missing after a Delhi-registered vehicle carrying 10 passengers plunged nearly 300 feet from a road cliff into the Lohit River in Arunachal Pradesh’s Anjaw district entered its fourth day on Sunday, August 16. Rescue teams are concentrating on downstream stretches where a strong current may have carried the missing occupants.
The accident occurred at about 6:00 am on August 13 in the Sarti area along NH-113 on the Walong–Hawai road, near the India–China border. The vehicle fell off the road into a deep gorge and landed in the Lohit River, where it became submerged.
One woman was killed in the crash. Six people — four men, another woman and a child — were pulled out and admitted with injuries. Three passengers remain unaccounted for.
The incident was reported to the District Disaster Management Officer (DDMO), Anjaw, at around 9:59 am on August 13. The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) immediately launched a search-and-rescue operation in coordination with Anjaw Police, the Indian Army, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the district administration and local residents and volunteers.
On Saturday, August 15, SDRF and local police teams carried out an extensive downstream combing operation covering roughly 12 km from the accident site but were unable to locate the missing persons; the search was called off at about 5:00 pm. Authorities later requested assistance from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) because the SDRF had limited resources for underwater recovery.
The NDRF team reached the site and began specialised underwater search operations on Sunday, August 16, starting at approximately 8:45 am with support from the SDRF. Teams are focusing on downstream sections of the Lohit River and specific locations where the current could have transported survivors or victims. The DDMA is coordinating the effort while local police and medical teams remain on standby at the scene.
Efforts are ongoing to locate the three missing persons and to recover the submerged vehicle from the Lohit River. Authorities have not released further details about the identities of those involved.
