Joyful Unity: Muslim Community Uplifts Spirits by Rescheduling Eid-e-Milad Processions to Sept 18, Say Reports
In anticipation of Anant Chaturdashi, also known as Ganesh Visarjan, on September 17, the Muslim community in Mumbai has rescheduled their Eid-e-Milad processions to September 18, according to the Free Press Journal. Traditionally, Eid-e-Milad, marking Prophet Muhammad’s birthday, is celebrated with processions on September 17. However, this year, the dates overlap with Visarjan. Consequently, community leaders convened at Khilafat House, Byculla, to discuss a potential date change, with some proposing even September 19 or later to avoid any clashes since Visarjans may extend to September 18.
Shuiab Khatib, trustee of Mumbai’s Jama Masjid, pointed out that dual celebrations might hinder the community’s ability to display their planned floats and that last-minute police permissions could be difficult to obtain. He suggested that postponing the processions to September 19 would also give police a respite from continuous deployment.
Meanwhile, in Navi Mumbai, the Eid-e-Milad procession has been postponed after a peace meeting organized by the Navi Mumbai Police. Attendees included various civic bodies and clerics. Mohammad Khalilullah Subhani, imam of Garib Nawaz Masjid, emphasized that rescheduling the procession would ensure the Ganesh immersion proceeds smoothly. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1) Pankaj Dahane lauded the move as a testament to communal harmony.
Similarly, Hyderabad’s Milad-un-Nabi organizing committee has agreed to delay celebrations to September 19 to avoid any conflict with Visarjan festivities.
Further, Maharashtra Congress leader Naseem Khan urged Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to move the public holiday for Eid-e-Milad from September 16 to September 18, aligning it with the rescheduled processions. Khan highlighted that this adjustment would allow both festivals to be celebrated with enthusiasm and without complications.
This collective decision underscores the spirit of unity and coexistence between the Muslim and Hindu communities, ensuring that both religious events are conducted peacefully and with mutual respect.
