Historic Win in Nagaland’s Paralympics: Empowering Investment in Disability Sports
State Commissioner for PwDs Urges Media & Public to Correctly Identify Paralympic Win
DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 8 (MExN): Nagaland’s inaugural Paralympic medalist, Hokato Hotozhe Sema, clinched Bronze in the Men’s Shot Put F57 Final at the Paris Paralympics 2024. This achievement, celebrated statewide, has highlighted the need for heightened support for para-athletes, states Diethono Nakhro, State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs).
In a press release, Nakhro emphasized that Sema’s milestone should mark a turning point for disability sports, not just in Nagaland but countrywide. While Sema’s win has garnered media attention, Nakhro emphasized its broader impact, referring to it as a "new benchmark" for young disabled athletes. She praised Sema’s resilience and determination, hoping it would inspire the disability sports community.
Nakhro also appreciated the Rs 1.5 crore reward announced by the State Government, recognizing it as a commendable acknowledgment of Sema’s historic win. "This financial reward demonstrates the government’s commitment to cultivating excellence in sports, particularly among para-athletes," she stated. However, she also called for increased inclusivity in sports infrastructure, training, and funding for disabled athletes. "With proper investment in facilities and support, many more world-class competitors like Hokato can emerge," she added.
Nakhro stressed the importance of correctly identifying Sema’s victory as a Paralympic win, not an Olympic one. "The Paralympics is the premier international sporting event for athletes with disabilities, held alongside the Olympics. It’s critical to distinguish this and we kindly request corrections where necessary," she urged.
As Nagaland rejoices in its first Paralympic medal, Nakhro expressed hope that Hokato’s success will inspire a new generation of para-athletes and steer the state toward becoming a hub for disability sports in India.
