Powerful Debut: Lakshmipriya Devi’s Emotionally Gripping ‘Boong’ Premieres at Toronto Film Fest
Amid Crisis, Manipuri Film ‘Boong’ Shines at Toronto International Film Festival
Guwahati: Despite ongoing violence in Manipur for over 16 months, Lakshmipriya Devi’s debut film ‘Boong’ has brought hope to the region. The film premiered at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 7, 2024, featuring in the Discovery section—a first for a Manipuri fiction film.
TIFF, held from September 5-15, 2024, in Canada, spotlighted ‘Boong’, marking a significant milestone for Manipuri cinema, which has faced numerous challenges and recent oversight at the 2022 National Film Awards. The film’s selection has rekindled global interest in Manipuri cinema.
Before ‘Boong’, only two Manipuri films—‘Imagi Ningthem’ by Aribam Syam Sharma and ‘A Cry in the Dark’ by Haobam Paban Kumar—had been showcased at TIFF. Supported by Bollywood’s Excel Entertainment, ‘Boong’ narrates the journey of a young boy reuniting his fragmented family, set in Imphal West’s Khurukhul village and Moreh near the India-Myanmar border.
The film, shot just before the ethnic violence in Manipur, captures the town’s essence and harmonious spirit before May 2023’s unrest. It was a community effort with diverse local contributions. Lakshmipriya Devi expressed the emotional weight of documenting a peaceful Moreh, which now feels distant.
She shared her passion for storytelling ignited by her grandmother’s comforting folk tales during Manipur’s turbulent times in the late 70s and 80s. Despite her established Bollywood career, Lakshmipriya chose to collaborate with untrained local crew members to bring authenticity to ‘Boong’.
As displaced residents of Moreh, currently in relief camps, yearn to see the film, ‘Boong’ has become a poignant time capsule. In these challenging times, the film stands as a beacon of hope, reminding us of the human spirit’s resilience. Its success at TIFF not only highlights Manipur’s cultural richness but also amplifies marginalized voices with stories that resonate beyond borders.
