Manipur CM Urgently Pleads With Centre: Bold Steps Needed to Safeguard Our Territorial Integrity!
Manipur CM Urges Centre to Protect State’s Integrity Amid Fresh Violence
Guwahati: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, on Sunday, September 8, 2024, called upon the Central government to safeguard the territorial integrity of his violence-stricken state. Singh emphasized that the Centre should resist demands from various Kuki-Zo groups for a separate administration.
These appeals were formally articulated in a memorandum submitted to Manipur Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya. Chief Minister Singh, along with numerous legislators and the Assembly Speaker, met Governor Acharya at the Raj Bhavan, where an in-depth meeting was convened.
In his memorandum, Singh underscored the urgent need for the Central government to restore peace and empower the state government adequately to manage the crisis. Additionally, he called for the revocation of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement signed in 2008. The SoO agreement, a truce between the Central government, state government, and two Kuki extremist outfits— the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) and United People’s Front (UPF)—is seen by Singh as a hurdle in maintaining state peace and integrity.
A statement from Raj Bhavan later confirmed that CM Singh, accompanied by his cabinet colleagues and the Assembly Speaker, had indeed presented the memorandum during an hour-long consultation with the Governor. The meeting was also punctuated by a new wave of violence earlier in the month, intensifying the urgency of Singh’s requests.
Singh’s firm stance against the Kuki-Zo groups’ demand for separate administration aligns with his commitment to a unified Manipur. This position, coupled with the revocation of the SoO agreement demand, delineates his government’s strategy to reclaim stability and peace in the region.
This appeal marks a critical moment in Manipur’s ongoing crisis, as the state government seeks decisive intervention from the Centre.
