A court on Thursday granted bail to four land-rights activists, including prominent campaigner Pranab Doley, the Land Rights Joint Struggle Committee said, naming the other three as Bijit Kutum, Bhaskar Saikia and Rajiv Pegu. (assam.nenow.in)
In a statement, the committee said the court’s decision has strengthened its resolve to continue the campaign for land rights across Assam. The group’s legal team — senior advocate Shantanu Barthakur and advocates Mrityunjay Pegu and Dipesh Agarwal — represented the four and were thanked for securing their release on bail. The committee also said legal proceedings remain active in a related case involving Adit Chandra Rabha, adviser to the Borduwar Bagaan Land Pattal Demand Committee. The organisation expressed gratitude to people across the state who rallied in support of the activists and raised their voices for land rights and justice while the activists were in custody. The four were arrested earlier in July during protests against a proposed luxury hotel near Kaziranga National Park. Land-rights groups oppose the project, alleging irregularities in land transfers for the hotel and demanding protection of local and indigenous communities’ rights; reports indicate the arrests took place on July 12, 2026.
