Meta has told the Indian government it will add extra safeguards for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s posts after a video from his account was briefly blocked on Facebook, sources said. Meta said prominent accounts will receive additional oversight and that, going forward, only senior Meta officials will vet such posts, with every decision reviewed by at least two senior company executives, the platform told the ministry, sources added.
The short video, uploaded on July 23, 2026, carried Mr. Modi’s message to Gen Z pledging stringent action against paper leaks. It was posted amid student protests led by the group calling itself the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The clip was removed briefly and later restored.
Meta has attributed the removal to a technical glitch in its AI-powered automated content moderation systems. Indian authorities, however, have not accepted that explanation and have pressed the company for more detail about how such a mistake could occur on the Prime Minister’s official account.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) summoned Meta and Instagram’s global heads earlier this week, and officials say the Meta team will meet the government again later in the week to discuss this and broader issues such as content regulation. Sources said the government is treating the matter seriously and is examining both Meta’s explanation and the circumstances that led to the removal.
IT Secretary S. Krishnan told reporters the company’s apology was welcome but insufficient. “It is good that they have apologised and admitted what they did was a mistake. But we are not happy with the explanation… it is not adequate, and we are seeking more details,” he said, according to the Press Trust of India.
Government sources say Meta has been asked to demonstrate how it will improve the reliability of its AI moderation systems and to outline concrete steps to prevent similar incidents on high-profile accounts in future.
