Guwahati: The Sivasagar district administration has requested a 10-day extension of the summer vacation for schools severely affected by ongoing floods, citing student safety and the need for recovery time. The appeal, aimed at schools battered by the recent deluge, asks that the summer break for flood-impacted institutions be extended until 10th August to allow repairs and ensure a safe return to classrooms.
According to the district education office, nearly 500 schools across Sivasagar have been hit by the floods, disrupting education for more than 70,000 students. Sivasagar Inspector of Schools Samiran Bora has formally written to the Directorate of Secondary Education and the Directorate of Elementary Education with the request, outlining the scale of damage and the safety concerns that prompted the extension plea.
The proposal specifies that schools not affected by flooding would reopen as scheduled on 1st August, provided the authorities approve the extension for the remaining institutions. If the directorates accept the request, flood-affected schools will remain closed for an additional 10 days, giving administrators time to assess and repair infrastructure and for families to recover.
District officials say the extension would give relief to thousands of students and their families while recovery work continues. The request now awaits a decision from the state education directorates, which will determine reopening timelines and any compensatory measures to make up for lost instructional days.
