The Arunachal Pradesh government has ordered a state‑wide inspection of all pharmacies and retail medicine outlets following complaints about regulatory breaches, improper drug storage and doubts over the qualifications of pharmacists. The Directorate of Health Services (Drugs Control Administration) issued the directive on July 30, asking zonal licensing authorities and drug control officers to begin immediate checks within their jurisdictions.
The inspections will cover every retail medicine outlet in the state, with officials instructed to verify licences, confirm the presence and credentials of qualified pharmacists, and assess compliance with statutory drug regulations. Authorities have been asked to prioritise outlets where complaints were received and to report any serious violations for further action.
According to the order, the drive was launched after a series of complaints alleging failures to follow legal norms, unsafe storage conditions for medicines and cases where pharmacists’ qualifications were not properly verified. Inspectors are expected to inspect storage practices such as temperature control, expiry‑date management and segregation of returned or damaged stock.
The exercise is primarily administrative and regulatory: officers will check paperwork, licences and credential verification processes, and ensure that dispensing is carried out by suitably qualified personnel. Any outlet found non‑compliant may face enforcement measures under existing drug laws and licensing rules.
Officials conducting the inspections must submit their findings to the Directorate by August 14. The timeline is intended to allow the department to quickly identify systemic problems and take corrective steps before the situation affects wider public health.
The Directorate said the campaign aims to ensure that medicines sold across Arunachal Pradesh are stored and dispensed according to prescribed standards and supplied only by qualified professionals, safeguarding patient safety and public health.
