Two Army personnel were injured in a landmine explosion near the Line of Control (LoC) in the Uri sector of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, military officials said. The blast occurred close to the Upper Garh forward post, manned by the 8 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), which operates under the 12 Infantry Brigade in the Kamalkote sub-sector of Uri.
Troops at the site immediately evacuated the injured soldiers and airlifted them to the Army’s Base Hospital in Badamibagh, Srinagar, where they are undergoing treatment and are reported to be in stable condition. The injured have been identified as Havildar Vijay Kumar and Naik Sharanapa Angari, both serving with 8 RR and on duty near the LoC when the incident took place.
Officials said the exact circumstances of the explosion are being ascertained, but it is suspected an old anti-personnel mine was triggered during routine patrolling. Anti-personnel mines are designed to wound or kill individuals rather than destroy vehicles, and legacy mines left from earlier conflicts can remain dangerous for decades.
Authorities noted that heavy rains and soil erosion during the monsoon season often dislodge buried mines along the LoC. Runoff and landslides can move these devices into previously safe, unmarked areas, increasing the risk of accidental blasts affecting soldiers and civilians.
A search-and-clear operation has been launched to sanitize the area and rule out the presence of additional explosives, military sources added.
