Chaos on NH-127B: Unregulated Street Vendors in Assam’s Dhubri Turn Modergola Into a Perilous Accident Hotspot
The growing number of street vendors along National Highway 127B in Modergola, Dhubri, has heightened concerns over road safety. This bustling area on Guru Teg Bahadur Road has become a potential crash hotspot as vendors set up shop dangerously close to the highway, posing significant hazards for both drivers and pedestrians.
A severe accident on September 8 underscored these risks when a speeding motorbike, registration number AS-17J-5784, collided with a stationary vehicle in the Modergola area. The motorbike’s rider fled, leaving Thaneswar Basumatary of Bijni severely injured. Basumatary had stopped to buy fish from one of the highway vendors, and his vehicle, registration number AS-26E-7010, suffered considerable damage to the rear right door.
This incident highlights how street vendors encroaching on highway shoulders create dangerous conditions. Vehicles often stop abruptly to purchase goods, reducing the space for other moving vehicles. These sudden stops, combined with high-speed traffic, set the stage for rear-end collisions, as drivers may not anticipate pedestrians and parked cars along the highway.
Moreover, the distractions these vendors create exacerbate the situation. Drivers divert their attention to engage with the stalls, increasing accident risks. The unchecked growth of these vendors leads to traffic congestion, erratic stops, and perilous pedestrian activity, converting this stretch of NH-127B into a potential hazard zone.
Without timely intervention from authorities to regulate or relocate the vendors, Modergola could see more frequent crashes, endangering both motorists and pedestrians. The pressing need for action is clear to prevent further accidents and ensure road safety in the area.
