Guwahati, July 26: The flood situation in Assam showed signs of easing on Saturday as water levels receded in several districts, but the death toll rose to 62 and at least eight people remained officially missing, authorities said. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said relief and rescue operations were being streamlined and that all flood-hit villages had been reached, adding, “By tomorrow (Sunday), the scene will be much better.” He also said the state would continue targeted airdropping of relief materials to inaccessible areas.
The latest flood bulletin reported that the Dikhow in Sivasagar and the Dhansiri at Numaligarh were still flowing above danger levels. The current wave of floods has affected 10 districts, 28 revenue circles and 810 villages, impacting nearly 6.55 lakh people. Authorities have set up 274 relief camps and distribution centres across the state to assist displaced residents.
The India Air Force has helped the state government transport and airdrop relief to marooned areas. President Droupadi Murmu expressed grief over the loss of lives, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Chief Minister Sarma and assured full Centre support for relief, rehabilitation and rebuilding efforts.
Despite the overall improvement, Nazira and Sivasagar remain worst hit. Thousands in Nazira are displaced after the Dikhow inundated hundreds of villages, damaging homes, roads, schools, markets, hospitals, tea estates and agricultural land. Many families are sheltering in relief camps or on rooftops and facing shortages of drinking water and essential supplies. Paddy fields and seedbeds have been buried under mud and silt, and train services in the area remain suspended due to damage to railway tracks.
Medical teams have intensified health camps across relief shelters in Nazira, distributing medicines and conducting check-ups to prevent disease outbreaks among displaced families. In Sivasagar town, floodwaters from the Darika river continue to submerge several localities, leaving roads and houses under waist-deep water even as river levels gradually fall.
Parts of Golaghat district, particularly the Dergaon revenue circle, are also in a critical state after the Gelabeel river submerged about 20 villages. Farmers reported heavy losses to paddy and other crops, and residents are coping with shortages of drinking water and fodder. Riverbank erosion has raised additional concerns for several riverside villages.
The livestock sector has been severely affected. Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Nilima Devi said roughly 8.58 lakh livestock had been impacted, with 725 animal deaths reported and more than 28,000 sick animals receiving treatment. Eleven veterinary experts have been deployed and 40 veterinary camps opened across Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat districts; financial assistance will be considered after detailed assessments.
Railway restoration work in Upper Assam is continuing round the clock, with more than 700 workers and heavy machinery deployed to repair damaged tracks and restore train services at the earliest.
