Bengal Govt’s Urgent Call: Uncovering Crucial Details of Resident Doctors in All Medical Colleges
West Bengal Health Department Seeks Detailed Records of Resident Doctors Amid Controversies
Kolkata, Sep 8: The West Bengal Health Department has issued a notification requesting comprehensive details of resident doctors from state medical colleges and hospitals. The extensive information sought includes registration numbers, Aadhaar and PAN numbers, mobile contacts, and academic records. Resident medical officers and senior residents hold non-practicing positions, prohibiting private practice outside of hospital duties.
While the health department has not disclosed the reasons behind this information request, the move has stirred unrest within the medical community. This development comes in the wake of the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital last month, which has already triggered widespread protests among medical professionals.
The timing of this notification is particularly significant given the recent suspension of three doctors known for their close association with Sandip Ghosh, the former and contentious principal of the West Bengal Medical Council. Ghosh is presently under Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) custody due to his alleged involvement in financial irregularities at R.G. Kar.
The suspended individuals include Avik De, former resident medical officer in radiodiagnosis at Burdwan Medical College; Dr. Birupaksha Biswas, former senior resident doctor in pathology at the same institution; and Mustafizur Rahaman Mallick, resident medical officer at Midnapore Medical College and Hospital. These physicians have faced numerous complaints alleging harassment and intimidation of junior doctors, reportedly leveraging their political influence.
As the medical fraternity closely watches these developments, a crucial Supreme Court hearing on the heinous rape and murder case is set for Monday. The CBI is expected to present its progress report on the investigation during this session.
