Conrad Launches Rs 146 Cr Projects in Sohiong — Boosting Growth
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on July 18 inaugurated the CM Connect Centre at the Sohiong Community & Rural Development (C&RD) Block and laid foundation stones for multiple development projects worth more than Rs 146 crore at a programme held at Mawtap Pyllun Ground in Shillong. The event saw the dedication of completed works and the launch of new initiatives intended to boost local infrastructure, livelihoods and services across the Sohiong area.
Sangma said eight completed projects, valued at Rs 5.48 crore, were formally handed over to the public, while foundation stones were laid for nine new schemes totaling Rs 140.74 crore. Inaugurated works include a Block Resource Centre, a plastic waste management unit, an Agricab facility for post-harvest storage, collective marketing centres at Nongur and Jamynthlen, and the provision of libraries and digital infrastructure for 13 villages.
The new projects for which foundation stones were laid focus on tourism and basic services: tourism infrastructure at Kynroh Viewpoint, Sohiong Viewpoint, Nongkasen Tree House and Lum Diengiei; multiple rural road projects; augmentation of the Greater Sohiong Water Supply Scheme; a flow irrigation project; and a futsal court. Officials described these as measures to strengthen connectivity, water access, agricultural storage and local tourism potential.
Speaking at the CM Connect session, Sangma said the initiative “reflects the government’s commitment to responsive governance,” emphasizing direct engagement with citizens. Residents used the forum to raise local concerns including soil erosion, pending applications under the solar mission, inadequate football facilities and poor mobile connectivity; the chief minister and departmental officials assured the public that these issues would be taken up.
The programme was attended by Community and Rural Development Minister Sosthenes Sohtun, Sohiong MLA Synshar Kupar Roy Lyngdoh Thabah and district officials. As part of the event, cheques were distributed to village organisations and sanction orders issued to several self‑help groups.
