IMD Warns: Very Heavy Rainfall Across Uttar Pradesh in 24 Hours

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday warned that large parts of Uttar Pradesh are likely to see widespread rain and thundershowers over the next 24 hours, with isolated pockets facing heavy to very heavy rainfall. The forecast said heavy rain is likely at a few places in the west, while isolated locations in the east could experience very heavy downpours.

The IMD also cautioned that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are very likely at several locations across the state. For Lucknow and nearby areas, the weather office predicted an overcast sky with intermittent rain and thundershowers on Sunday, with daytime and nighttime temperatures expected to settle around 29°C and 26°C respectively. Local warnings include the possibility of isolated heavy rain and lightning.

The wet spell coincided with rising river levels in parts of western Uttar Pradesh. The Central Water Commission (CWC) issued a warning for Gautam Buddh Nagar district after the Hindon river at Noida flowed above the danger mark. In a bulletin issued at 6:52 pm, the CWC reported the river level at 196.16 metres at 6 pm — 0.16 metres above the danger level of 196.00 metres — and rising at about 40.01 mm per hour. That level remained 1.12 metres below the highest recorded flood level of 197.28 metres on July 26, 2023, placing the river between the danger mark and the highest flood level.

In Lucknow, Saturday’s maximum temperature settled at 31.4°C, about 2.5°C below normal, while the minimum was 27.9°C, roughly 1.8°C above normal. The city recorded a trace of rainfall between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm. Among major stations across the state, Banda recorded the highest tally with 70.8 mm, followed by Hamirpur (45 mm), Ghazipur (41.6 mm), Churk in Sonbhadra (29.4 mm), Jhansi (9.8 mm) and Barabanki (9 mm). Other readings included Ballia 6.1 mm, Bareilly 5.4 mm, Orai 4.2 mm, Shahjahanpur 2 mm, Prayagraj 1.6 mm, Fursatganj 0.8 mm, Gorakhpur and Moradabad 0.4 mm each, and Bahraich 0.2 mm. Several district centres, including Kanpur, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Agra, Ayodhya, Sultanpur and Basti, reported no rainfall during the observation period.

Daytime temperatures remained below normal at many locations because of prevailing monsoon conditions, although parts of Bundelkhand continued to record highs above 38°C. This report is published from a syndicated feed.
