ECI’s First All-India Media Conference: Boosting Electoral Awareness
Agartala, July 17, 2026 — The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday held its first-ever All India Media Conference 2026, bringing together more than 380 media professionals from States and Union Territories under the theme “Connecting Stakeholders, Strengthening Democracy: Role of Media in Elections.” The one-day event aimed to deepen journalists’ understanding of electoral laws, procedures and the media’s role in safeguarding democratic processes.
Addressing delegates, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said elections in India are conducted strictly in accordance with the Constitution, electoral laws and directions issued by the Election Commission. He stressed that the entire electoral process is continuously audited by stakeholders, ensuring transparency and accountability at every stage.
Highlighting the strength of the system, the CEC described India’s electoral rolls — covering nearly 95 crore voters — as a “living document” that evolves continuously. He noted that over 12 lakh Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and some 15 lakh Booth Level Agents (BLAs) participate in preparing and verifying the rolls, acting as concurrent auditors of the process.
Gyanesh Kumar pointed to record voter turnout in recent Assembly elections as evidence of public confidence in the democratic framework. He also thanked citizens for their participation in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Conference sessions covered constitutional provisions, the Representation of the People Acts, election transparency measures, the ECINET digital platform and the role of technology in election management. Officials briefed participants on the duties of Booth Level Agents, Polling Agents and Counting Agents in ensuring free and fair polls.
Media delegates observed live demonstrations of electoral roll preparation, polling and counting procedures and received hands-on exposure to statutory election forms and processes. The programme ended with an interactive question-and-answer session between attendees and the Chief Election Commissioner.
Representatives from Tripura who took part included Pranab Sarkar (Headlines Tripura), Anal Roy Choudhury (Pratibadi Kalam), Dr. Biswendu Bhattacharjee (UNI), Achintya Bhuiya (Times 24), Avijit Nath (Tripura Observer), Sujit De, Dibakar Debnath, Ranjit Debbarma (Chini Khorang), Abhijit Ghosh (Janatar Mashal) and Abhishek Dey (Syandan Patrika). The ECI said the initiative seeks to strengthen collaboration between the commission and the media to promote informed, transparent electoral coverage.
