Urgent Assam Eviction for Greater Haflong AMRUT 2.0 Water Project
Eviction has begun at a partially encroached government plot in Lodi village as the Mission Greater Haflong Water Supply Scheme under AMRUT 2.0 moves into its execution phase. The cleared land will host a major reservoir that officials say is essential to tackling Haflong’s long-standing drinking water shortage.
The plot belongs to the Soil Conservation Department and has been identified specifically for the construction of the reservoir component of the centrally funded scheme. Work on the site marks the first concrete step toward implementing the Greater Haflong plan in the district headquarters of Dima Hasao, Assam’s only hill station.
Approved by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs under the AMRUT 2.0 programme, the project is designed to expand and modernize Haflong’s water supply network. It is estimated to cost Rs 100.63 crore and will be financed centrally as part of the urban rejuvenation effort.
When complete, the system will provide a pumping capacity of 70 lakh litres per day and extend services to 10,086 households through House Service Connections (HSCs). The scheme also includes laying about 70.25 km of distribution pipelines to improve reach and continuity of supply across the town.
An underground reservoir with a storage capacity of 2.2 lakh litres will be built to support continuous distribution and enhance system efficiency. Officials say the reservoir is a cornerstone of the scheme and should help secure a safer, more reliable drinking water supply for Haflong’s growing population.
The project is scheduled for completion within 18 months. If delivered on time, the Greater Haflong Water Supply Scheme is expected to significantly reduce water scarcity in the town and improve daily life for thousands of residents.
