Thousands of Devotees Gather for Velankanni Car Festival
A multitude of devotees gathered to witness the car procession at the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health in Velankanni, Nagapattinam district, on Saturday, September 7, 2024. This event marked the pinnacle of the 11-day feast dedicated to Our Lady of Good Health.
The celebrations commenced at 5:15 p.m. with rituals such as the Rosary, Litany, and Novena prayer, followed by a Holy Mass officiated by Most Rev. T. Sagayaraj, Bishop of Thanjavur Diocese.
The grand car procession began at 8 p.m., featuring a series of illuminated cars and culminating with the majestic car of Our Lady of Good Health parading through the streets before returning to the Basilica. Security was tight, with a significant police presence ensuring the event proceeded smoothly.
On Sunday, September 8, a special feast mass will be held in the Morning Star Church to honor Mother Mary’s birth anniversary. The feast will conclude in the evening with the ceremonial lowering of Our Lady’s flag.
The annual celebration had begun on August 29 with the flag hoisting on the church premises. Continued community engagement and devotion marked the feast’s proceedings, reflecting its spiritual significance for the attendees.
