Arunachal Pradesh CM, NITI Aayog Unite to Boost Disaster Resilience

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has urged that disaster management policies be tailored to the state’s distinct geography and climate, saying standard approaches used elsewhere in India cannot adequately address the region’s risks. He made the remarks during a meeting with a high-level NITI Aayog delegation led by Member Dr. Joram Aniya, accompanied by Rita Missal of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and senior officials from NITI Aayog, NDMA and the Central Water Commission. The talks focused on strengthening resilience and preparedness for floods, landslides and other climate-driven hazards that frequently affect the state’s mountainous terrain and river systems.

Khandu stressed that local realities must drive policy. “Disaster management in Arunachal Pradesh must be shaped by the realities of our terrain, climate and people, not by one-size-fits-all policies,” he said, urging strategies that reflect the state’s topography and communities.

Officials discussed practical measures to improve early warning, response and infrastructure resilience, and to align development priorities with disaster risk reduction. The delegation’s mandate included assessing on-the-ground needs and advising on interventions suited to steep slopes, shifting rivers and remote settlements that complicate both prevention and relief operations.

In a social media post after the meeting, the Chief Minister welcomed the delegation’s field visit, saying first-hand assessments are crucial in the wake of recent floods. He thanked the visiting team for engaging directly with local officials and communities to better understand the immediate challenges and gaps in relief and recovery.

Khandu said such on-site engagements and region-specific planning are vital to design support mechanisms and policies that can reduce loss of life and livelihoods in Arunachal’s unique landscape.
