Urgent Alert: Indefinite Curfew Imposed in Jiribam Amid Explosive Surge of Violence
Manipur Government Enforces Indefinite Curfew in Jiribam District Amid Escalating Violence
Imphal: In response to renewed ethnic violence in Manipur’s Jiribam district that led to the deaths of five individuals on Saturday, the state government has imposed an indefinite curfew to maintain peace and order.
The victims included two Meiteis and three Kukis, who were killed in separate violent incidents throughout the district, prompting officials to implement rigorous measures to prevent further unrest.
Effective immediately, the curfew was declared under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). It prohibits gatherings of five or more people and restricts movement outside residences. Additionally, the possession of weapons and other dangerous items has been banned.
Krishna Kumar, the district magistrate, issued the curfew order, which exempts government agencies, security forces, and essential services. However, exceptions for emergencies and essential activities such as weddings and funerals are allowed, provided prior written permission is obtained from the district magistrate or the superintendent of police.
The enforcement of the curfew will be overseen by the superintendent of police with assistance from security forces to ensure strict compliance and maintain law and order in the district. Legal action will be taken against those who violate the curfew.
The situation remains tense, and authorities are keen on preventing any further escalation. The order will stay in effect until further notice.
