PoK Youth Repatriated After Risking LoC to Reach His Beloved
A 22-year-old man from Pakistan‑occupied Kashmir, identified as Zeeshan Mir, was handed over to Pakistani defence forces on Sunday at Uri’s Kaman Crossing after being repatriated more than a month after crossing the Line of Control (LoC). Indian authorities say Mir was intercepted in north Kashmir’s Uri and repatriated following legal formalities and a brief, three‑minute meeting with his alleged partner, Iram Bano, who lives in Tilawari village near the LoC.
According to The Times of India, Mir was caught on May 31 in the Silikot area and a video soon circulated showing the couple identifying themselves while responding to questions from an unseen person believed to be a security official. The report says Iram was released without charges, while Mir was booked under several laws, including the Foreigners Act.
An Uri court later accepted the Jammu and Kashmir police’s final report, concluding that Mir had crossed the LoC to meet Iram and closing the case, which resulted in his acquittal and clearance for repatriation. Authorities described the crossing as a desperate attempt to reach his beloved rather than a security threat.
The families on both sides of the border are reported to be related and had maintained contact through social media over the years. Mir’s family, the report notes, originally hailed from Uri but migrated to PoK decades ago.
Iram’s mother, Afroza Begam, said the family supported Mir during the proceedings while he was held at the Uri police station: “We got clothes and shoes for him.” She added they were allowed a three‑minute visit before his repatriation and quoted Mir as saying, “He was calm and told us not to cry.” Afroza said the army treated him “like a guest,” expressed hope that PoK authorities would treat him well, and said she hoped the couple could marry once formalities such as Iram’s visa are resolved: “Hope Iram’s visa is approved.”
The Indian Army said Mir was treated with “dignity, compassion and due care,” underscoring what it described as a commitment to humanitarian values and professional conduct during his stay. The episode highlights the human and legal complexities that surround cross‑LoC ties and the sensitive handling such cases require.
