Manipur Twin Raids: Two Assam Men Rescued; Massive Arms Cache Seized
Imphal: A joint team of security forces and the Manipur Police on Saturday rescued two men from Assam who were allegedly being held captive in Ukhrul district as financial collateral, and in a separate intelligence-led operation recovered a large cache of arms, explosives and ammunition from Chandel district. Authorities said both operations were part of ongoing efforts to curb violence and illegal armed activity in the state.
The rescue followed an urgent alert from Titabar Police Station in Assam that two individuals had been unlawfully confined in Manipur. Security personnel traced the victims to Changta village, which falls under the jurisdiction of Lungchon Maiphai Police Station in Ukhrul district, and carried out the rescue after confirming their location. The men were identified as Kasob Kachari, 29, and Ajay Gogoi, 33, and were handed over to their respective family members after being freed.
Police said the principal accused in the alleged abduction remains absconding. A formal case has been registered and intensive search operations are underway to locate and arrest the suspect, officials added.
Separately, an intelligence-based operation in the general area of Mombi village under Molcham Police Station in Chandel district led to the seizure of a substantial weapons cache. Officers recovered nine single-barrel rifles, two 9mm pistols with magazines, two improvised mortars, one stick hand grenade and 94 rounds of ammunition of various calibres, according to police statements.
No arrests were reported in connection with the arms recovery. The seized weapons and ammunition have been deposited at the concerned police station and a case registered. Investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible for concealing the arms and to determine their source and intended use.
