Assam Labourer Arrested in Arunachal in Viral Sexual Harassment Case
A 26-year-old labourer from Assam has been arrested after a video of the alleged stalking and sexual harassment of a young woman in Nirjuli, Arunachal Pradesh, circulated on social media, police said. The incident occurred on June 9, when the accused reportedly followed the woman to her computer class in Rayo Colony, touched her inappropriately and exposed himself, according to Naharlagun police.
The woman, frightened but uninjured, resisted by pelting stones at the man, forcing him to flee the scene. Following the viral circulation of footage of the incident, Nirjuli police registered an FIR and booked the case under Sections 74, 75(2), 78(2), 79 and 296 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the authorities said. The FIR prompted an investigation that identified the suspect through intelligence gathered during the probe.
Police named the accused as Imdadul Rahman, 26, a resident of Sonapur in Assam’s North Lakhimpur district who had been working as a labourer in the Nirjuli area. A police team tracked him to Sonapur under Dolakhat and arrested him while he was allegedly hiding after the incident, officials said.
Superintendent of Police Dr Nyelam Nega commended the survivor for resisting the attack and for reporting the crime, and reaffirmed the police force’s commitment to ensuring women’s safety and taking strict action against offences targeting women. The investigation is ongoing.
