Manipur Govt Vows to Protect Cultural Heritage After Kangla Board
Manipur Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh on Friday, July 3 reaffirmed his government’s commitment to conserving and promoting the state’s cultural and historical heritage after the 34th meeting of the Kangla Board in Imphal. The meeting reviewed plans for developing the Kangla Fort while stressing that any works must protect the site’s heritage value.
The session was attended by Arts and Culture Minister Kh. Loken Singh and other board officials. Board members examined ongoing and proposed development initiatives at the historic Kangla Fort and discussed measures to balance infrastructure improvements with conservation needs.
Sharing the outcome on social media, the chief minister said the discussions centred on carrying out development works without compromising the fort’s historical character and archaeological integrity. He underlined the government’s long-term view on protecting heritage sites while enabling public access and responsible tourism.
“The government remains steadfast in its commitment to conserving and promoting Manipur’s rich heritage for the benefit of future generations,” Singh said.
The Kangla Board is the statutory authority charged with the administration, maintenance and preservation of Kangla Fort, which served as the political and cultural centre of the erstwhile Manipur kingdom. Officials said preservation efforts will prioritise archaeological safeguards and cultural continuity as development proceeds.
The state government reiterated that efforts to develop the historic site will continue alongside measures to safeguard its archaeological and cultural legacy, aiming to ensure that Kangla Fort remains both a protected heritage site and an accessible symbol of Manipur’s history for coming generations.
