Manish Tiwari Angered by Election Panel Snub; Congress Clash in Punjab
The Indian National Congress on Wednesday unveiled its election committee for the Punjab assembly polls due next year, signaling a renewed push to reclaim the state after last time’s defeat. The committee includes more than 40 leaders, retains the existing state president and leader of the opposition, and adds some new names — but notable absences have sparked internal discontent, most visibly from senior leader and Chandigarh MP Manish Tewari.
Tewari, a former Union minister and long-serving Congress MP, publicly expressed his disappointment on X on July 2, 2026, after he was not included in the party’s core team for Punjab. In a post that mixed Hindi and Punjabi lines, he reflected on his 45-year association with the party and said he had devoted his life to its service. He also wrote, “Wish I had an antidote for the insecurities of individuals and institutions,” and added that “what I wanted to say is in my post.” He declined further comment to the media.
According to an anonymous senior Punjab leader quoted by the party, Tewari had not expected a top organizational appointment but was nonetheless surprised that he was not consulted at any stage of the committee’s formation. Tewari has previously represented Ludhiana and Anandpur Sahib in Parliament and has held several responsibilities within the party in Punjab.
Party sources say the current round of organizational restructuring in Punjab is being carried out under the supervision of Rahul Gandhi. The reshuffle has reopened old fissures: Tewari was among the group of 23 dissatisfied Congress leaders who, in August 2020, wrote to then-party chief Sonia Gandhi seeking organizational reforms. Other senior figures in the state have also voiced unhappiness with recent moves, including the decision to keep Raja Warring as state president — a choice that has left leaders such as Charanjit Singh Channi and others discontented.
The announcement underscores growing tensions within Punjab’s Congress as it prepares for a high-stakes electoral fight. With leadership choices and committee composition already provoking public reactions from prominent figures, the party faces the dual task of presenting a united front to voters while managing internal grievances ahead of the campaign.
