Assam Principal Arrested for Alleged Molestation; Outrage in Cachar
The principal of a private school in Cachar district, Assam, was arrested after he was accused of allegedly molesting a Class 6 student inside his office, police and witnesses said. The accused, identified as Dr S. Gnanavel, principal of Sonai APJ Senior Secondary School and a native of South India, was taken into custody by Sonai Police following a complaint about the incident.
According to the complaint, the incident occurred at around 2 pm on Wednesday, June 1, when the principal allegedly called the minor student into his personal chamber and sexually harassed her. The girl’s family and local residents lodged a formal complaint with the police after the alleged assault.
News of the alleged incident sparked immediate outrage in the locality. Residents reportedly detained the accused on the spot, assaulted him, and later handed him over to Sonai Police. Authorities said the assault on the accused was carried out by locals before police arrival.
Hundreds of villagers, including members of the Tribal Women’s Association from Natun Ramnagar in East Sonai, staged a protest outside the Sonai Police Station demanding stringent punishment if the allegations are proven. Protesters submitted a written complaint and raised slogans calling for exemplary action against the accused.
Parents and local residents voiced deep concern, saying schools must be safe spaces for children. They urged a fair, speedy investigation and asked authorities to ensure the strictest legal consequences if the charges are substantiated.
Sonai Police confirmed that a case has been registered, the accused principal has been arrested, and an investigation is underway. Further legal action will depend on the evidence collected during the probe.
