Rajasthan Police’s CID (Intelligence) said on July 2 that it has uncovered a major network allegedly funding espionage inside India after arresting a man accused of acting as a conduit for Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the ISI. The agency arrested the suspect, identified as Rafiq Chand Shaikh of Harsul in Aurangabad district, Maharashtra, on June 30 as part of an investigation registered under the Official Secrets Act, 1923.
Officials said Shaikh, son of Chand Miyan Shaikh, is accused of facilitating transfers from ISI handlers to individuals suspected of passing sensitive information. The CID traced a financial trail that, it alleges, showed payments routed through Shaikh in exchange for espionage-related activities.
According to investigators, Shaikh has been in contact with an ISI handler for nearly four years. They say he opened multiple bank accounts-both in his name and in the names of others-after receiving instructions through a network that operated via social media platforms, to channel funds to alleged operatives.
The arrests follow earlier detentions in the same case of two accused: Jhabra Ram of Jaisalmer and Sumit Kumar, a multi-tasking staff employee posted at the Indian Air Force Station in Dibrugarh, Assam, who were alleged to have passed sensitive defence-related information to ISI handlers.
CID (Intelligence) officials said verification of financial transactions and interrogation established Shaikh’s purported role as a funding agent for the ISI, responsible for routing money to suspected operatives inside the country. All allegations have been described by officials as part of an ongoing probe.
The agency said the investigation is continuing and that officers are examining additional transactions and potential links to identify other individuals who may be connected to the alleged ISI funding network. Further details are awaited. — IANS
