Gaurav Gogoi Slams Assam, Centre Over Nagaland Border Failure
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi on June 30 accused the Assam and Central governments of failing to resolve the decades-old Assam-Nagaland border dispute, alleging that encroachment on Assam’s territory continues unchecked. Speaking after visiting the Mariani stretch of the border in his Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency, Gogoi said the state’s boundary was being altered and questioned whether the BJP-led Assam government had effectively conceded land to Nagaland even before the Supreme Court delivers its verdict.
Gogoi told reporters that people living along the border “have been facing aggression from the Nagaland side for years,” and called the responses of both the Assam and Central governments “deeply unsatisfactory.” He said interactions with local residents during his visit confirmed that border villagers continue to face repeated difficulties because the dispute remains unresolved.
The Congress MP also alleged that the Nagaland administration had admitted to constructing a bridge within Assam’s territory in 2020. He added that “about a week ago, local residents from Assam went to clear roads near that bridge under the Job Card scheme, but they were prevented from doing so by people from the Nagaland side,” describing the incident as further evidence of ongoing encroachment.
Questioning the Assam government’s stance, Gogoi asked whether parts of Assam had already been surrendered before the Supreme Court adjudicates the matter. He said the Congress would continue to safeguard Assam’s interests and cooperate with efforts to protect the state’s territorial integrity.
Assam shares a 512.1-kilometre border with Nagaland; the boundary dispute dates to 1963 when Nagaland was carved out of Assam and is currently pending before the Supreme Court. According to information previously tabled by the Assam government in the state Assembly, around 59,490.21 hectares of Assam land are allegedly under encroachment by Nagaland — the highest reported among Assam’s neighbouring states.
