Massive Landslide Blocks Siji River, Arunachal — Downstream Flood Alert
A massive landslide at Siji Block Point in Lower Siang district reportedly struck on Sunday and has blocked the flow of the Siji River, creating a natural debris dam and raising fears of a sudden flash flood if the barrier gives way. Authorities say the blockage could cause upstream water to accumulate and endanger downstream communities if the debris collapses.
Officials are closely monitoring the site for signs of rising water and possible breach. A video from the location showed a biker narrowly escaping after being nearly swept away by strong currents, underscoring the immediate danger posed by unstable river conditions.
Lower Siang Police issued an advisory for residents of Likabali, settlements along the Siji River and downstream areas, including neighbouring parts of Assam. The advisory urged people to stay vigilant, avoid riverbanks, follow local administration instructions and share the warning widely to reach vulnerable communities.
Travel through landslide-prone routes has been strongly discouraged. Authorities asked residents to avoid non-essential journeys until weather and road conditions improve, noting that clearance work on the National Highway at Siji had been underway when a hill collapsed, complicating relief and movement.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rainfall across several parts of the state, increasing the risk of further landslides and flash floods. Police warned the situation could pose a serious threat to life and property and asked residents to cooperate with emergency teams.
Tuting-Yingkiong MLA and advisor to the Arunachal Pradesh chief minister, Alo Libang, urged people to remain alert and take precautions. In a social media post he said, “The situation across Arunachal Pradesh is becoming increasingly concerning, with reports of landslides and flooding from several areas. A hill collapsed while the road clearance work was underway following a massive landslide on the National Highway at Siji in Lower Siang district.” He added, “I earnestly request everyone to remain alert and take necessary precautions. Please avoid unnecessary travel, especially during heavy rains, unless it is absolutely urgent.” Libang also appealed for cooperation with authorities and rescue teams, reminding residents that “Arunachal Pradesh is a sensitive hilly region, and during the rainy season, the risk of landslides and flash floods increases. Let us stay cautious, follow safety advisories, and cooperate with the authorities and rescue teams. Stay safe and stay alert.”
