Meghalaya International Summit: Women Farmers & Sustainable Agriculture
Meghalaya will host the International Conference on Women Farmers and Sustainable Organic Agriculture on June 26–27, 2026, bringing together policymakers, farmers, researchers, advocates and agricultural experts from 10 countries to mark the 2026 United Nations Year of the Woman Farmer. The two-day meeting aims to place women farmers at the centre of discussions on food security, environmental sustainability and climate-resilient agriculture.
Co-hosted by the Government of Meghalaya and IFOAM–Organics Asia, and coordinated by the Cold Mountain Food Processing and Marketing Cooperative Society Ltd, the conference will feature sessions on policy innovation, market access, organic farming practices and strengthening climate resilience in rural communities. Organisers say the event will spotlight practical solutions and scalable models that support women-led agriculture.
Conrad K Sangma and Karen Mapusua will attend as Guests of Honour, alongside several national and international dignitaries. Delegates will include a mix of practitioners and experts, providing opportunities for cross-border exchange of best practices and collaboration on research and policy.
Under the theme “Women Farmers Leading Change Globally for Organic Food Systems,” panels and workshops will explore barriers that many women farmers face, including insecure land tenure, limited access to finance and technology, constrained market linkages, and exclusion from decision-making forums. The programme is designed to showcase successful initiatives that address these gaps and to encourage stronger institutional commitments.
Organisers emphasise Meghalaya’s growing role as a hub for sustainable and organic agriculture and its focus on women-led rural development. The conference aims to raise the profile of women farmers as key contributors to local livelihoods, national food security and climate adaptation.
The event is expected to conclude with a joint declaration calling for increased recognition, investment and policy support for women farmers to advance sustainable development, food security and resilient agricultural systems.
