Tripura’s Statewide Water Grid: Game-Changing Move to Save Groundwater
The Tripura government has begun work on a comprehensive “Tripura Water Grid” project to supply safe, treated drinking water across the state by tapping surplus surface water from its rivers, officials said after a high-level review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Manik Saha. The plan proposes using surplus flow from 12 rivers to build an integrated distribution network aimed at expanding coverage and strengthening the state’s long-term water security.
In the first phase, the project will draw water from the Gomati River to serve key urban and semi-urban centres including Agartala, Udaipur, Bishramganj and Bishalgarh. Authorities say treated surface water from the Gomati will reduce the heavy dependence on groundwater, which currently supplies most drinking water in Tripura.
Officials highlighted that shifting to treated surface water should help address the state’s longstanding problem of high iron levels in groundwater, improving water quality for consumers while creating a more sustainable supply. The proposed grid is designed to link treatment plants and pipelines so water can be moved where it is needed, creating redundancy and resilience during dry periods or local shortages.
During the review, planners discussed strategies to harness surplus river flows, expand treatment and distribution infrastructure, and stage development to meet future demand. If implemented as outlined, the Tripura Water Grid would aim to modernize the state’s water system, lower pressure on aquifers, and provide safer drinking water to a larger population.
