NCST Review: Critical Assessment of ST Safeguards at Sikkim University
Dr. Asha Lakra, member of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST), on Monday, June 22, 2026, chaired a review meeting at Sikkim University to assess the implementation of constitutional safeguards, reservation policy and welfare measures for Scheduled Tribes. The session aimed to evaluate current practices and identify areas for improvement affecting both ST students and staff.
The review was attended by senior university officials, including members of the administration, vice-chancellors, senior professors and other officers. Attendees presented information and documentation to the NCST team in the prescribed format for scrutiny.
During the meeting, Dr. Lakra and the NCST delegation examined the details submitted by the university and recommended enhancements to documentation and procedural systems. The commission highlighted the need for clearer record-keeping and updated procedures to ensure effective delivery of reservation and welfare provisions.
Dr. Lakra also held discussions with those present to record any outstanding issues and assured participants that significant matters would be escalated to the appropriate authorities for resolution, with the objective of benefitting both students and employees from Scheduled Tribes.
The NCST additionally conducted an interaction-cum-meeting specifically with ST employees of the university to hear their concerns directly. Sikkim University expressed gratitude to Dr. Lakra and the NCST team for their visit and for the guidance and observations intended to support further upgrading of systems and procedures, according to a university press release.
