IWAI’s Brahmaputra River Yoga Celebrates International Day of Yoga
The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) marked the 12th International Day of Yoga with river-based sessions aboard vessels on the Brahmaputra, bringing together IWAI staff, employees and local residents to perform the Common Yoga Protocol across multiple locations in Assam. The initiative combined wellness practice with a showcase of the scenic and commercial potential of India’s inland waterways.
At Pandu in Guwahati, participants practiced yoga onboard the tugs MPT Sukhdev and HPT B.R. Ambedkar while cruising along National Waterway-2 (the Brahmaputra). The sessions followed the nationwide observance and focused on accessible postures and breathing exercises designed for broad public participation.
Similar events were held at Jogighopa aboard the vessel WB Saffron, with additional yoga sessions conducted onboard WB Iris and WB Tansy at Bogibeel in Dibrugarh. IWAI personnel and members of surrounding communities joined the activities, reflecting growing acceptance of yoga as a lifestyle practice beyond formal studios and parks.
Prabin Bora, Director (I/C) of IWAI’s Guwahati regional office, credited the spread of yoga to national leadership and policy support, and said the river-based observance reflected IWAI’s role in promoting and managing the country’s inland waterways. He described the onboard sessions as symbolic of harmony between human well‑being and nature and as reinforcing a message of building a healthy, sustainable and inclusive future.
Observed under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” the celebrations emphasised yoga’s role in enhancing physical fitness, mental wellness and holistic living, while highlighting the longstanding cultural connection between India’s rivers and traditional practices. The events aimed both to promote public health and to draw attention to the strategic and scenic value of the Brahmaputra and other inland waterways.
