Guwahati Police Confirm No AI-Generated Images in DPS, SFS Cases

Guwahati, June 20 — Deputy Commissioner of Police Shambhavi Mishra on Saturday said two separate investigations into allegations of circulated AI-generated images involving Delhi Public School (DPS) and St Francis De Sales (SFS) School are unrelated, and that investigators found no evidence of AI-created photographs or videos. Complaints from both schools were received at the Cyber Police Station on June 13, Mishra told reporters at a briefing in Ulubari, Guwahati.

Mishra said officers recorded statements from school principals, teachers, administrators, students and others linked to the incidents as part of the inquiries. She emphasized the matters became conflated in public discussion only because both surfaced around the same time.

In the DPS matter, investigators found that a student created an Instagram account under a different identity and shared access with several peers. “The account contained content from completely public profiles. During our investigation, we found no objectionable chats, photographs or videos,” Mishra said. After a dispute among users of the account, one person compiled screenshots of chats into a PDF that began circulating.

The DCP added that many people reacted to the circulating PDF without verifying its contents. “People assumed that AI-generated images and videos were being shared through the account. As rumours spread, an individual with incomplete information initiated an online petition claiming to seek justice,” she said, noting the petition and social media commentary amplified the matter nationally despite a lack of supporting evidence.

In the SFS case, Mishra said a student had downloaded a few images from the internet and shared them with friends, later claiming to possess additional images to impress peers. That claim circulated and prompted another student to request the images to identify those involved, she explained.

Assumptions among students then fuelled further misinformation. “One student assumed that photographs of seven girls had been shared. Based on these assumptions, an Instagram group involving members of the class was created, where discussions took place. As information passed from one student to another, rumours spread rapidly and eventually went viral,” Mishra said.

She stressed investigators did not recover any AI-generated content and no victim came forward in either case. Mishra urged that the situation could have been averted if students had informed parents, teachers or school authorities early rather than attempting to handle matters themselves: “If students had informed their parents or school authorities in time rather than taking it upon themselves to deliver justice, the situation would not have escalated to this extent.”

Authorities also appealed to media organisations and the public to exercise caution when reporting on sensitive school-related incidents, warning that unverified information and speculative coverage can seriously harm the reputation, future and well-being of students.
