The Meghalaya government has unveiled an ambitious master plan to make Shillong — centred on a new development called New Shillong — the state’s focal point for the next phase of tourism growth. Announced at a state-level consultative workshop organised by the Department of Tourism in Shillong on June 17, the proposal includes a Rs 450-crore monolith tower measuring 123 metres that the government says would become the country’s second-tallest public monument after the Statue of Unity. The plan aims to attract higher-value domestic and international visitors and raise the standard of the state’s tourism offerings.
The tower is envisaged as the centerpiece of a broader tourism ecosystem that will feature a skywalk, immersive galleries, restaurants, cafeterias, souvenir outlets and various recreational facilities. Planners say these attractions are intended to extend visitor stays and provide new vantage points and experiences in and around Shillong.
The proposed tourism zone will also include a luxury resort and hotel, a convention centre, an event ground and direct connectivity with the upcoming football stadium. Authorities are drawing up plans for a public park, an amusement park and a Meghalaya-themed cultural park designed to showcase local traditions, sports and handicrafts.
Tourism Minister Timothy D. Shira described the initiative as a “pivotal shift” in the state’s tourism strategy and announced the creation of a dedicated Destination Management Organisation (DMO) to oversee growth, coordinate across departments and ensure accountability. He emphasised sustainable development, saying: “Tourism must not come at the cost of our environment or our cultural identity. Instead, it should strengthen both.”
Commissioner and Secretary of Tourism Rosetta Mary Kurbah said the state aims to build on an annual footfall of around 18 lakh visitors by increasing international arrivals and encouraging longer stays rather than brief visits. She highlighted infrastructure priorities including improved connectivity, reliable water and power supply, congestion management and destination beautification, alongside expansion of hospitality capacity that incorporates local culture and customs.
The workshop also reviewed plans to transform Umiam into a world-class tourism destination, with discussions focused on infrastructure development, environmental management and enhanced connectivity. Officials said stakeholder consultations will continue as the government finalises a roadmap to position New Shillong as a flagship tourism destination and to strengthen tourism-led economic growth in the state.
