Indian Kidnapped Collecting Grass at Border Rescued by Bangladesh
Bangladesh authorities handed over an Indian man to Indian officials on Tuesday night after he was allegedly abducted along the international border earlier that day, police sources said. The man has been identified as Ranjit Das, a resident of Cachar district in Assam, who went missing after heading to a border area to collect grass on Tuesday morning.
Locals allege Das was seized by a group of Bangladeshi nationals from a spot known locally as Zero Point — an area beyond the border fence that sources say lies on Indian territory. The reported abduction raised tensions in the border communities and prompted action by both sides.
“The abducted man Ranjit Das was handed over to Indian authorities by the Bangladesh Border Guard (BBG) at around 10 pm on Tuesday,” a police source said. Following the handover, Das was taken into the custody of Indian officials for further inquiry.
Separately, nine suspected illegal immigrants from Bangladesh were left stranded in no-man’s-land near the India-Bangladesh border by Assam’s South Salmara-Mankachar district. A flag meeting between the two border forces was convened to resolve the situation, officials said. The meetings are standard protocol for addressing cross-border incidents and resolving immediate tensions along the frontier.
