Dibrugarh Bus Stand to Shift to MJBT — Major Traffic Relief
Dibrugarh: The Dibrugarh district administration has ordered the relocation of the city’s Bus and Traveller Stand to the Murlidhar Jalan Bus Terminus (MJBT) effective June 19, 2026, as part of steps to reduce traffic congestion and improve road safety during major infrastructure works. Reported by Avik Chakraborty.
Under the new directive, all buses will terminate at MJBT and will not be permitted to operate beyond the terminus; school and college buses have been exempted from this restriction.
The order, issued by the Office of the District Commissioner, follows warnings from the Public Works Roads Department (PWRD) about the proposed Amulapatty Flyover. PWRD said flyover construction could aggravate congestion and raise accident risks during the work, and that the planned service roads would be suitable only for light motor vehicles and two‑wheelers — prompting calls to limit heavy vehicle movement within the city.
Officials also pointed to the ongoing construction of the Mancotta Road Railway Over Bridge (ROB), which has already constrained the flow of heavy vehicles into and out of Dibrugarh.
The decision was taken at a Regional Transport Authority (RTA), Dibrugarh meeting on June 10, 2026, where members reviewed implementation of Supreme Court directives on road safety and discussed traffic disruptions from the ROB and the proposed Amulapatty flyover. The RTA unanimously agreed that regulating the movement of buses and travellers was necessary in the interest of public safety and traffic management.
The order notes that existing bus stops along the State Highway (Old NH‑37) lack dedicated parking or terminal space beyond the carriageway, a factor that contributes to congestion and safety concerns.
A joint team from the Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation, the District Transport Office and the Traffic Branch of Dibrugarh Police has been tasked with assessing preparedness and ensuring a smooth transition to MJBT. The Dibrugarh Traffic Police will publish a route map and traffic advisory for affected services, while the District Transport Officer has been directed to arrange feeder transport connecting passengers to and from the new terminus.
The Dibrugarh Traffic Police and the District Transport Officer have been ordered to ensure strict enforcement of the new regulations. The order warns that violations will be punishable under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
