Guwahati, June 16 — Terminal 2 of Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA), operated by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), has been named to the World’s Most Beautiful Airports List 2026 by Prix Versailles. Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), also under AAHL, received the same recognition. The awards highlight excellence in design, sustainability and passenger-centric planning.
The design of LGBIA’s Terminal 2 is driven by a biophilic concept described as the “Bamboo Orchid,” which the airport says honours the region’s rich biodiversity through a functional and sustainable building envelope. Positioned at the crossroads of South and Southeast Asia, LGBIA is presented as a major gateway to Northeast India, a region noted for its ecological diversity and indigenous cultural heritage.
Navi Mumbai International Airport’s Terminal 1 was recognised for its lotus-inspired architecture and futuristic design language, with emphasis on the integration of technology, art and functionality to create a world-class passenger experience that the statement links to India’s ambitions as a modern global economy.
Alongside LGBIA and NMIA, five other international airports were named to the 2026 list: Guangzhou (China), Frankfurt am Main (Germany), Kandal Stueng (Cambodia), Pittsburgh (United States) and San Diego (United States). The selections reflect a global trend toward airport architecture that moves beyond purely functional layouts to offer distinctive, culturally informed spaces.
Prix Versailles, an annual international architecture and design award presented at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris since 2015, recognises newly launched airports and terminals for contemporary creations that synthesise striking architecture with cultural and environmental considerations. The awards promote “intelligent sustainability,” where cultural identity informs and transcends environmental design. Three airports or terminals from the 2026 list will also receive a World Title (Prix Versailles Interior or Exterior) to be announced at the end of the year.
