Historic India-Slovakia Partnership Sealed in PM Modi Visit

June 15, 2026 2 Min Read

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Bratislava on Monday, June 15, 2026, becoming the first Indian head of government to visit Slovakia since the Central European nation’s 1993 independence, and announced that New Delhi and Bratislava had upgraded their relationship to a formal “Comprehensive Partnership.” Hosted by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, the visit produced a sweeping joint statement covering defence, counter‑terrorism, trade, technology, energy and culture, signalling a fast‑deepening bilateral agenda.

The most consequential outcome was a Letter of Intent on Defence Cooperation, which opens the door to collaboration on defence technologies, research and development, and defence industrial partnerships. The joint statement said both leaders agreed to encourage “regular consultations and exchanges between their respective defence authorities,” laying a framework for sustained strategic engagement with a NATO member that has a significant arms‑manufacturing base.

Security cooperation also advanced: the statement explicitly condemned the April 22, 2025 Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir as a “heinous terrorist attack” and established a Joint Working Group on Counter‑Terrorism. Leaders urged “strong and decisive action against terrorists and terrorist entities,” including those listed under the UN Security Council’s 1267 Sanctions Committee, and pressed for early adoption of a Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism at the UN.

Economic ties were given fresh momentum against the backdrop of the India‑EU Free Trade Agreement talks concluded in January 2026. Both leaders called for early signing and implementation of the FTA, and identified automotive, electronics and advanced manufacturing as priority sectors. The India‑Slovakia Joint Economic Committee was named the principal vehicle to drive trade and investment cooperation forward.

On technology, the two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Digital Technologies covering artificial intelligence, semiconductors, start‑ups and innovation ecosystems, and agreed to cooperate on post‑quantum cryptography and critical infrastructure protection. Both leaders referenced the AI Impact Summit 2026 in Delhi, attended by Slovak President Peter Pellegrini, as a foundation for deeper digital collaboration.

Energy and space cooperation were also flagged, with agreements to explore nuclear and geothermal energy collaboration and increased satellite technology ties. Slovakia reiterated a “constructive approach” to India’s membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group and backed India’s bid for permanent membership in a reformed UN Security Council.

Practical people‑to‑people measures include a Labour Migration MoU to facilitate skilled mobility, work toward a Social Security Agreement, an Audio‑visual Creation MoU for film co‑productions, and an Education MoU to expand academic links. Both governments also agreed to explore direct air connectivity between India and Slovakia, underscoring a shared intent to convert diplomatic momentum into tangible exchanges.
